Last week, St. Lucia became the latest CARICOM country to place a ban on the Jamaican dancehall singer, who had been scheduled to perform here at the end of the month.
KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica government is investigating the circumstances under which the dancehall artiste, Vybz Kartel, had been banned from performing in St. Lucia, the Jamaica Observer newspaper reported on Friday.
The paper quoted Wilton Dyer, head of communications at the Ministry of Trade, as saying that contact had been with the Jamaica High Commission based in Trinidad and Tobago and that the authorities here also plan to speak with the artiste as Kingston probes the decision to ban the dancehall deejay.
“There is concern as to whether the ban imposed by the government of St Lucia on the deejay has breached the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Free Movement of Skills Initiative which relates to artistes, sports persons, musicians and media workers,” the newspaper said.
Last week, St. Lucia became the latest CARICOM country to place a ban on the Jamaican dancehall singer, who had been scheduled to perform here at the end of the month.
A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister in St. Lucia noted that in deciding whether or not to grant a work permit to the singer, the government had deliberately refrained from rushing to a judgement by establishing an adhoc committee to discuss the request from the promoters.
It said the committee was required to look at a number of factors, including a comprehensive research of the history of the artiste, solicit views and opinions of key institutions and organisations in the country and determine the general impact of the artistes’ performance on the population, particularly the youth.
“Having looked carefully at the significant amount of information presented, and considering the views and opinions of the many individuals and institutions as well as available options, the Government of St. Lucia through the Ministry of Labour, Information and Broadcasting has decided not to grant a work permits to Mr. Adidja Azim Palmer otherwise known as Vybz Kartel for performances at the Hot FM promoted Supreme Weekend show scheduled for April 30 and May 1, 2010.”

What a crock of shit! this man is one the the elite reggae artists today….why? because people love his music…not just the musical aspect…but also the lyrical content. there is a demand…A DEMAND for his art work. Art is something that will not appeal to everyone, so because it doesnt appeal to you… you try to present all kinds of cases so that he does not perform in your country. Guess what Lucians, and the rest of the english speaking Caribbean, the majority of your sons and daughters will listen to this man’s art work regardless of what you do. they will watch his videos, they well dance and make your grand children and great grand children to his music. Stopping him from performing will not stop the youth from being violent or engage in illegal activities. hypocrites if you ask me. Let’s NOT judge….
You too damn stupid. You want a man that glorify guns and violence to come to St. Lucia? No wonder the country going to shit. Sakway sot.
guess what jamaicans and the ministry of trade vice cartel has been banned by barbados, grenada and guyana before he was banned by st lucia so honestly what is the point here. why dont u go and probe these countries first what u scared of Thompson and jagdeo and besides wasn’t it the jamaican prime minister who had to broker peace with these guys wasnt it he who thought that that type of music was inciting violence amoung the jamaican youth gully and gaza (mind u most of whom dont even know where the real GAza strip is)

am reading that piece of that news clip and honestly am not seeing, nothing saying why the singer is being banned if there is a reason why let the ppl know. am not a fan of his music and I find it a bit to dehumanizing to listen to but if you talk to the young people today they are saying that they can relate to his music but I wonder why is it the rudeness? is it the the rife between Gaza and gully? that the young ppl in the Caribbean and it seem that is has already begun here in Dominica sad to say so we need to know what type of music we are letting our children and young ppl listen to before it is too late
