BARBADOS – Police believe they have cracked a cold murder case

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Members of the Cold Case Squad of the Barbados police force have arrested a suspect in what they believe is a breakthrough in a seven-year old murder case.

Media reports here said police are awaiting instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions Chris Leacock before proceeding with charges against the 45-year old man who was taken into custody for the brutal murder of an elderly woman.

The body of 79-year old Floretta Yearwood was found in a pool of blood outside her home on the outskirts of the capital on April 8, 2003.

Police investigating the case worked on the theory that Yearwood’s residence had been broken into.

A family member, who spoke to the media upon learning of the news, did not seem overly enthralled by the apparent breakthrough in the case.

“The police have to do what they have to do but as far as I am concerned I have forgiven him … nothing that they do no will bring her back,” Yearwood’s sister, Elaine Highland, told the Nation newspaper.
